This musical about forbidden love features several audience favorites, including "Maria," "I Feel Pretty," "America," "Tonight" and more.
The beautiful story and music of West Side Story is destroyed in this production. Everything about it was so bad we could hardly sit through the whole show. The only good thing I can say is that it was fairly short.
I was so very disappointed in this production of West Side Story. The show is a favorite of mine- and I had so looked forward to it- but I have to agree with a few other reviews that at best it rivaled a good high school production.
First, we've often remarked on how terrific the sound mastering is at the Hippodrome. Unfortunately the sound last night was tinny, and offensive, especially on the ladies' songs.
Tony consistently changed the octave on several of his songs, and totally swallowed the higher pitches. Maria had something truly strange going on with her vowels- to the point that her speech sounded alternately Italian and garbled!
I also agree with the problems presented by having such climactic scenes in Spanish only. It was a disappointment when Chino told Maria of Nardo's death in Spanish only. I've been a loyal subscriber of the Hippodrome since it reopened 8 years ago. This was by far the most disappointing performance I've ever seen there.
Just got back from West Side Story and I couldn't wait for it to end. The singing is "high school" quality at best, ditto the acting. What a waste!! And the idea to put many of the song lyrics and dialogue in Spanish was a bad one at best. You lose half the play and the feelings because you can't understand what they're saying and this is after I studied Spanish for many years. the "leads" and I use the term loosely were awful!! Some of actors in the ensemble would be better suited to the leads as they're more talented. DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$.
